A dentist recommends tooth extraction when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, loose, impacted, or cannot be predictably restored with treatments that could save it. We generally consider extraction only after evaluating whether the natural tooth can be preserved.
When Might We Recommend Extraction?
At Ivory Dental Clinic, we may recommend tooth extraction when:
1. Severe tooth decay: Too much tooth structure has been destroyed to restore it reliably.
2. Advanced gum disease: Significant bone and tissue loss has made the tooth very loose or difficult to maintain.
3. Severe fracture: A crack or break extends into a part of the tooth that cannot be predictably repaired.
4. Persistent infection: The tooth cannot be successfully treated with procedures such as RCT.
5. Impacted wisdom tooth: A wisdom tooth is trapped or positioned in a way that causes problems and requires removal.
6. Severe trauma: An injured tooth may need extraction when the damage is beyond repair.
7. Orthodontic treatment: In selected cases, a tooth may be removed to create the space needed for proper alignment.
Tooth extraction is not automatically the first choice for a damaged tooth. When possible, we consider tooth-preserving options such as fillings, crowns, or root canal treatment before recommending removal.
At Ivory Dental Clinic, we examine the tooth, surrounding gums and bone, and available treatment options before recommending extraction.
